Protesters from Dima Hasao call for justice for Women Victims in Manipur.

The growing violence against women in the neighbouring state of Manipur sparked a significant protest on Tuesday in the Dima Hasao region of Assam, when hundreds of women from diverse ethnic tribes marched through Haflong town. The All Dima Hasao Joint Women’s Organisation (ADHJWO) called for justice for the victims of recent horrendous acts of violence against women in Manipur during the protest demonstration.

This massive demonstration was started by a horrific video that leaked on social media on July 19. Two Kuki women were shown in the distressing video being paraded naked insulted and one of them cruelly gang-raped by a group of Meitei men in a paddy field in the Kangpokpi area of Manipur. A nationwide call for justice was sparked by the shocking footage that shocked the nation.

The All Dima Hasao Joint Women’s Organisation (ADHJWO) strongly denounced such awful acts and demanded that those responsible for them face swift punishment. The purpose of the protest march was to raise awareness of the seriousness of the issue and demand justice for the Kuki women who had been wronged.

But the Manipur event wasn’t an isolated one. N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, said that hundreds of crimes against women of a similar nature had taken place in the state during the previous three months, revealing a disturbing trend of abuse and violence.

The violence in Manipur has its roots in ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities that erupted on May 3. The clashes escalated into large-scale violence, further exacerbating the already tense situation in the Northeastern state.

The demonstration in Assam’s Dima Hasao district signified the collective anger and frustration of women who are demanding an end to the culture of violence against women in the region. The ADHJWO’s call for justice resonated with people across India, with various organizations joining the chorus and expressing solidarity with the victims.

As the protesters demanded justice for the assaulted women, their voices echoed far beyond the borders of Manipur, drawing attention to the urgent need for stronger measures to protect women’s safety and rights. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that women face in India, where gender-based violence remains a pressing issue.

The protest in Assam highlights the power of collective action and the importance of solidarity in the fight against crimes targeting women. As the nation watches and waits for justice to prevail, it is crucial for authorities to respond promptly and effectively, ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that measures are put in place to prevent such heinous crimes in the future.

In conclusion, the mass protest in Assam’s Dima Hasao district has brought the nation’s attention to the harrowing crimes against women in Manipur. The demand for justice for the victimized women resounds strongly, urging authorities to take swift action and address the pervasive issue of violence against women in the region. Solidarity and collective action have become crucial in the fight for a safer and more equitable society.
