ASSAM FLOOD RESCUE SAVING PRECIOUS LIVES SRIKONA BATTALION

[SILCHAR; 22 Jun 2022]: On 22nd Jun 2022, in continuation with the ongoing relief and rescue efforts in the Barak Valley, Srikona Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ 21 Sector Assam Rifles & IGAR (East) launched flood rescue operations in general area of Rangir Khari and GC College in Silchar town of Assam.

With the water having risen over the danger level, large swathes of area were inundated with entire colonies submerged over five feet of water. Swift & coordinated actions were carried out to rescue precious lives and to calm the panic amongst residents reeling from rising water levels. The column carried out extensive rescue operations prioritising people in dire need of medical attention as well as the old, infirm and weak. The timely and swift action resulted in 464 lives being saved including 77 males, 268 females and 119 children and a major humanitarian disaster being averted for the time being.

Additionally, the column also assisted the civil administration in providing food, essential stores and precious water to those stranded within their homes. Rescue efforts are ongoing with the locals appreciating the yeoman service rendered by Assam Rifles.
